Google Cerf-ing For British Engineers

Google evangelist Vint Cerf, father of the Internet, will canvas several universities in the UK to help recruit graduates to work for his company's new research and development center in London.

Maybe Cerf can bolster what has been a difficult effort for Google in the UK: recruiting engineers for jobs. The legendary progenitor of the TCP/IP protocol has been brought across the big pond to try and steer prospective engineers to the London Googleplex. In ZDNet UK, Google discussed the search advertising company's efforts in finding candidates and Cerf's new role as human resources recruiter:

"We are actively recruiting engineers in London for our new R&D center," Google told ZDNet UK. "Vint Cerf is here in London to support that drive and will be visiting a number of universities to stimulate interest among students. Engineering is at the very heart of what we do at Google--we use innovative technology to help solve complex problems," it continued.

"The great paradox of the digital world is that as more and more information comes online, the harder it becomes for people to find what they want. By using the best engineering talent available Google ensures that users can find the most relevant information, and communicate it to their family, friends and colleagues," Google added.

Compare this situation to the United States, where Google seems to have no problem bringing new recruits into the fold. The UK certainly has no lack of technical talent, and its universities offer plenty of courses on computer science.

One has to wonder if Google is offering competitive salaries to top recruits. If someone has the kind of advanced skills Google prefers, that person will be a recruiting target for other employers. With all job duties being equal, there is no reason for someone to take a job with Google to solve complex problems when they can do so in a more lucrative position elsewhere.

And that could be a real bummer for Cerf.
