BPI Tries To Ban ISPs To Reduce Unauthorized File Sharing

By Bruce Houghton

UK label association BPI has reached an agreement with ISPs on measures designed to reduce unauthorized file sharing.

But while stricter legislation may follow, so far, the deal lacks the teeth that some had hoped for.

On behalf of hundreds of record companies, The BPI has signed a memo with the UK's six largest ISPs. The Motion Pictures Association of America also signed on. The deal places joint commitments to continue educational programs and the ISPs will be required to work towards a "significant reduction" in files sharing.

In the first year, informative letters will be sent by participating ISPs to accounts identified by The BPI as being used illegally. Beyond that, "the signatories will work together to identify effective mechanisms to deal with repeat offenders."

Steve Purdham, CEO of we7.com reacts:

"This is a significant and necessary step in the tough and long battle against illegal downloading. What's exciting is that it represents real communion of thoughts and actions between important parties for the first time. ISPs, record labels, marketers, artists and sites like us are starting to work more together to educate consumers about why and where to legally, freely and safely download."

"The next step is to actively encourage more legal alternatives such as We7 to flourish, giving consumers more choices and access to great music where the rights owners get paid. At We7, we've seen a steady growth of consumers engaging with the ethics and safety of our service. Taken positively, this latest initiative is evidence of the shift that's occurring in the mindset of the industry parties, which will ultimately lead to a better deal for consumers and artists alike."
