Google Gains Rights To Google.ru

Cybersquatting is a common occurrence in Russia. Internet laws were slower to develop and because of that, there have been numerous incidents where international corporations have found their namesake URL domains already taken.

This happened with Google. Recently the search industry leader retained rights to the Russian version of their domain name. Google has had a Russian interface since 2002, but it wasn't until April 3, 2004 that Google received rights to Google.ru.

Until now, Russian users who typed Google.com into the browser were forwarded to Google.com.ru. Now users will be redirected to the URL's more natural name, Google.ru.

Thanks to MultiReg.com for the heads up.
